Because
of the tremendous influx of Catholic Families into the Pt.
Pleasant-Brick area since 1955, His Excellency the Most
Reverend Bishop George W. Arh established the Parish of St.
Dominic and appointed Reverend John A. Ozarowski as Pastor
June, 6 1962. The
first mass in the new parish was celebrated in 88 Bowling
Lanes on Father’s Day. Sunday, June 17, 1962.
Seventeen acres of
land in Brick, fronting St. Highway 88 and bounded by Old
Squan Rd. on the East and Van Zile Road on the west was
purchased for $76,578.67 on April 16, 1963, from Samuel and
Ann Silverman.
After
a tedious Parish Census it was determined it would be
necessary to build a Church, capacity 1,000; a 16 classroom
school; an all purpose building to be used as a cafeteria,
gym, and a social hall; and a Rectory for the Pastor and
future assistants.
The
groundbreaking ceremonies were held on Sunday, January 12,
1964, and construction of the building started on February
3, 1964. His
Excellency the Most Reverend Bishop W. Arh, presided at the
laying of the cornerstone and the Blessing of the Church,
the School, and Gymnasium on June 20, 1965.
In
the fall of 1971, Father Ozarowski stepped down as the
Pastor of St. Dominic’s and Father Thomas Szurenda, who
was the Associate Pastor, was appointed as the Temporary
Administrator of the Parish.
In Jan.
1972, Father Edward Bumbera was appointed as the second
Pastor and served in that capacity until April 1977.
He was succeeded by Father Richard Brietski, who was
appointed as the temporary administrator.
He served the people until the appointment of Father
John J. Gibbons, on May 27, 1977.
During
the administration of Monsignor John J. Gibbons, a much
needed Daily Mass Chapel was built and complete in May 1996.
Msgr. John J. Gibbons served as Pastor until January
1998. Rev James
J. Brady, who previously served as a pastor of the Ascension
Church in Bradley Beach, was appointed as Temporary Pastor
until his installation as permanent Pastor in May 1998.
Dedicating himself to the Lord through the growth of
a Christian Community Spirit in the parish, he began
energetic invitational programs for people to experience God
more fully and thus strengthened the spiritual and social
life in the parish.
